We were asked to complete an assignment that is a requirement for our subject that is SKBS 2043 Introduction to Genres. We are required by Mr.Nackeeran to create a webpage based on short stories, novels or poem with our own creativity. We were divided into groups to make things easier. We formed a group consisting three members that are me myself Nur Shazwani Bt Abdul Azim, Syamira Bt Ahmad Daud, and Thum Siew Sin. Three of us decided to do the webpage based on poems that we have chosen. The poems are ‘The Red, Red Rose’ , Mother to Son, and ‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud’. The poems are written by various authors that are Robert Burns, Langston Hughes and W. Wordsworth. We did a small research about the poets, the theme, analysis and the moral value of the poems. Before we enter the excitement world of poems, let us give a brief description on the definition of poem. =)

~About Poem~

Welcome to the world of artistic writing, sometimes referred to as creative writing. Artistic writing includes many literary genres--essays, poems, short stories, plays, etc. A genre is the type of writing a piece of literature is. Of course, there are the broad categories of prose and poetry, but each of these can be divided more specifically. Types of prose include drama, articles, novels, and short stories while types of poetry include lyric and narrative.
The poem, whether it rhymes or not, is probably the most artistic of all genres.

A poem is a delicate juggling act of rhythms, figurative language, and sometimes rhyme. The poem as an art form is both visual and auditory. A poem will most often have sections, or divisions, that are identified as either stanzas or strophes. Stanzas are divisions of a rhyming poem, and strophes are divisions of a poem that does not rhyme, and may also be known as free verse.

A reader, without reading words, can look at a poem and know it is a poem by its appearance on the page. Likewise, a listener can hear a poem read aloud and know it is a poem because it sounds like one.The earliest poems written in English were ones that rhymed. Even though much modern-day poetry does not rhyme, rhyme is a device that helps to structure a poem and makes it easy to commit the poem to memory.

William Wordsworth
=William Wordsworth =
William Wordsworth (April 7, 1770April 23, 1850) was a major English romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their 1798 joint publication, Lyrical Ballads. Wordsworth's masterpiece is generally considered to be The Prelude, an autobiographical poem of his early years that was revised and expanded a number of times. It was never published during his lifetime, and was only given the title after his death. Up until this time it was generally known as the poem "to Coleridge". Wordsworth was England's Poet Laureate from 1843 until his death in 1850.

After abandoning his family and the later legal dissolution of the marriage, James Hughes left for Cuba, then Mexico, as a consequence of the enduring racism in the United States. After the separation of his parents, young Langston was raised mainly by his grandmother, Mary Langston, as his mother sought employment. Through the black American oral tradition of storytelling, she would instill in the young Langston Hughes a sense of indelible racial pride. He spent most of childhood in Lawrence, Kansas.

Here, we had chosen, Mother to Son!!! HAVE FUN.... =)

++The Red, Red Rose by ROBERT BURNS++

=ANALYSIS=

Literally, in the 1st stanza, the persona is comparing his love to a flower that is a rose which bloom in June. He also signifies his love like a song that is nicely played in rhythm. His love that is toward a lady will stay until the seas go dry as pictured in 2nd stanza. Not only the seas, but the rocks will melt as well. On the last stanza, he finally wants to go away from her love and saying farewell. However, he willcome again although it were ten thousand miles.

Metaphorically, this poem is a about a man who is deeply and madly in love with a girl. This is proven when he compares his love to the red rose. The rose is showed as ‘red, red’ rose which pictures the beauty of the rose. The rose symbolizes the passionate, the faith and the madness of the persona’s feelings of love towards his girlfriend. He also represents his love as smooth and amazing like the melody. “O, my luve’s like the melodie, That’s sweetly play’d in tune”. He is exaggerating his depth of love by saying that he will love her until the seas gang dry. He uses the hyperbole and the comparison of his love and the seas mean that his love is for eternity. He also exaggerates or using hyperbole when he compares his love to the rocks and the sand. On the other hand, he has to live his girlfriend and promises that he will come back no matter, how far he goes. “And I will come again, my Luve, Tho’it were ten thousand miles".

=THEME=

Because modern readers are well familiar with the poetic imagery that Burns uses in this poem, and also because "A Red, Red Rose" was originally written to be sung as popular music, some of the poem's impact may be lost to the contemporary audience. The poem expresses love, but it does not try to stir up deep feelings of passion—instead, it reminds readers of love, making the speaker's feelings sound more theoretical than real

=MORAL VALUE =

This poem I wandered lonely as a cloud is about loneliness and home sickness. It describe how someone feel when in the foreign place. The moral values of these poems is someone should facing the life challenge bravely. Although we are not familiar with the foreign place, we cant giving up, and should bravely facing the challenging. In the poems, Wiliam Wordsworth describe a situation of foreign place, and this metaphor with his home sickness. When someone leave their hometown and having a life in foreign place, we have to facing all the life challenge individuality, nobody can help you, thus, we have to facing the life challenging bravely.
Besides that, the other moral values of the poems is depend on oneself. Like what have already mention in above, people have to learn independent. We have to do all the works by ourselves, cant depend to others people. In the foreign place, nobody can help us, we have to do all the works by ourselves, and it will let people more mature than others.
I wandered lonely as a cloud giving us a positive information, life is full of changing, we have to facing life by using our positive point of view. Although life is difficult, we also have to facing it, because trouble is also a part of life.

++I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by W. WORDSWORTH++

=ANALYSIS=

I wandered lonely as a cloud is a famous poem written by William Wordsworth. This poem became one of his loveliest poems. Besides, this poem is all about the beauty of nature and it shows the strong emotion of the persona. Here, the memory daffodil is impressed in the persona’s mind and soul. He expressed what he feels trough this poem as a human nature where people always have a tendency to share their feeling and experience with others. We want to make the others see the same like we had seen before. “A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company:”

In this poem, the persona described ‘daffodils’ as a great and beautiful flower. Besides, he feels that whenever he's feeling lonely, dull or depressed, he thinks of the daffodils, and he will cheers up. Even though there is a moment in his life where he feels nothing to think about but the daffodils always make his life happier. “Which is the bliss of solitude; and then my heart with pleasure fills, and dances with the daffodils”. In this poem, Wordsworth had compared the cloud which is aimlessly with the sense of lonely. Moreover, the daffodils are personified as a human being, “waves beside them danced…”. “Tossing their heads in sprightly dance”.

In short, this poem shows the unity between man and nature, making it one of Wordsworth's most memorable poems.

=THEME =

The themes of this poem is about lonely and homesickness. This is what Wiliam Worthsword mention in the poem: Being from the North of England ( Barrow-in-Furness and Whitehaven), I spent many happy hours in the Lake District and after 40 years still get homesick for it. I am very grateful to the teacher who made me learn by heart this We often go through life as if we were unconscious of what is going on. I am grateful to the teacher who made me learn by heart this beautiful poem. I even have some fun with it with my children, as such spring whatever I see the first daffodils. I immediately start up with, “I wandered lonely as a cloud”, accompanied by groans from the family. I have always made it a point to plant daffodils where ever I’ve lived, so I hope others have enjoyed them also. From this poem, we know that the themes is about the loneliness.

Besides that, we know that the simply happiness is come from live our lives and the simply beauty that nature gives us daily.

++Mother to Son by LANGSTON HUGHES++

=ANALYSIS=

Mother to Son is a really great poem written by a famous African American writer, Langston Hughes. In this poem, Hughes develops a kind of negative metaphor by comparing the speaker’s life with a staircase that ‘ain’t been no crystal stair’. Throughout this poem, the mother develops the metaphor by describing what she doesn’t have rather than what she has. The poem started with “Well son, I’ll tell you: Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair”. Here, crystal stair was described as a perfect life. However, the mother’s life is full of pain and suffers. She wants her son to realize that life is not always comfort. “It's had tacks in it, And splinters”. She had to live in a difficulty and it hurts her. Besides, ‘boards torn up’ is also another which portrays her life as unstable and always faces an unexpected problem. She ought to live in poverty and comparing her life with no carpet on the floor-bare. Despite any obstacles in her life, she wants her son to follow her steps ho keep on going up in her life. “But all the time I’se been a-climbin’on”. She never regret because she know that there are certain time in her life, where she had a little bit of stability. No matter what problems come, she must keep on struggling and surviving.

Moreover, she wants to motivate her son that although there are darkness and sorrow in her life, but there still a moment that had lighten our life and will make us stronger to face any possibilities that come to us. Sometimes we lost in our journey, and sometimes we feel that there is no more hope for us. Here, we can see another metaphor; ‘ain’t been no light’, which light is compare with hope. Finally, the mother reminds her son again to never give up and she wants him to be strong in his life. Don’t let our sorrow, pain and trouble to stop us from going up in our life.

In short, this poem had taught us how’s life it is. Life will make us to be a better and the experience will mature ourselves.

=THEME=

Langston Hughes' moving poem "Mother to Son" empowers not only the son, but also the reader with precious words of wisdom. Through the skillful use of literary devices such as informal language, symbolism, metaphors, repetition, as well as clever use of format, Hughes manages to muster up the image of a mother lovingly, yet firmly, talking to her son about life. This poem, mother to Son, by Langston Hughes teaches a valuable life lesson about never giving up. Even when life is getting more difficult and one thinks they cannot go on, they need to keep climbing.

=MORAL VALUE=

The moral value that can be found in the poem of ‘Mother to Son’ is that we have to be strong to fight the obstacles in our life. To achieve the successfulness in our life, we have to realize that our life is not always in the bright side. There are also the dark sides when we have to face all the difficulties in order to fulfill our dream. Although, sometimes you will find that it is quite hard to remain the way you are, you have to keep holding. Sooner or later, we will eventually succeed in our life.

Other moral value in this poem is the relationship between the mother and her son. The mother advises her son to be grateful in his life and keep fighting for life for she will always be supporting his son. “Don’t you fall now. For I’se still climbin’“.

=CoNCLuSioN=

Before we wrap up, we want to share our experiences while completing this assignment. Along our research, we found that we have gained plenty of knowledge about the world of literature. Not only that, in order to find information about the poems, we have to surf the related webs and this indirectly has taught us how to deal with the online research.

Furthermore, we chose to do this research in blog form that is www.blogger.com. Not all the members of group are expert in managing this kind of task that is involving the online process. So, by doing this assignment, they will learn the benefit and the advantages that they will get with this Internet access. Not only we can get the information that we needed faster but it is economically as well. We don’t have to buy books that are related instead we can just sit at our room and find the information that we want. What could be any easier than that??! Besides the uses of the Internet, all the members of the group give well cooperation in order to finish this assignment.

To conclude, all of us have a great time in completing this task that we have learned so much about the poems and online research. We all want to thank Mr. Nackeeran for giving us the opportunity to show our ability to do a webpage although to be exact we didn’t do a website instead chosen the blog form.

~Thank you. =)
